How long dental crowns last?

How long dental crowns last?

Crowns are used to help save or restore a damaged tooth. A crown is placed over the tooth like a cap, and allows patients to be able to use their tooth again. Crowns make damaged teeth stronger and durable, and aesthetically look great. They are permanently cemented on to the damaged tooth, and are one of the most common restorative procedures done today.

We may recommend dental crowns when:

  • A root canal treatment was done and now a crown is needed.
  • The patient’s tooth is stained, misshaped, or discolored.
  • A patient has a damaged, injured, or cracked tooth.

Crowns last on average between 5 and 15 years, and this also depends on the wear and tear of the crown. The more wear and tear the crown faces, may lessen the life of the crown. It is important to follow good oral hygiene habits to care for your crown properly. If crowns are cared for, they can last between 25-30 years.

Recommendations to help your crown last:

  • Avoid biting down on hard objects or foods that may cause damage to your crown.
  • Avoid clenching your teeth or grinding your teeth while your sleep. We may recommend mouthguards if a patient suffers from bruxism.
  • Make sure you attend your regular scheduled dental exams at one of our four locations to ensure your crown remains healthy.

If you currently have a crown and notice a chip or crack, or pain around the crown, we encourage you to contact one of our locations immediately. We can help to determine if your crown needs replacement. If issues with a crown are not treated promptly, cavities can form underneath and cause more serious issues.

If you are interested in finding out more about our crown procedures, contact one of our four locations to schedule your appointment.
