WHAT CAUSES SWOLLEN GUMS AROUND A TOOTH?
There are a few reasons you may have swollen gums around a single tooth including poor oral hygiene, gum disease, or an abscess.
What Causes Swollen Gums Around a Tooth?
Oral hygiene plays an important role in keeping our teeth and gums healthy. If you do not brush and floss regularly to remove any food or bacteria from your teeth and mouth, problems may occur. This can lead to inflammation or decay, and over time can develop into gum disease. A few common symptoms that indicate you may have gum disease include bleeding gums, swollen gums, bad breath, a loose tooth, or a bad taste in your mouth.
Gum Disease
If you do not practice good oral hygiene habits bacteria can infect the tissue surrounding your tooth and inflammation can occur. If left untreated this can lead to periodontal disease. Signs to watch out for include bleeding gums, sore or tender gums, loose teeth, or gums that seem to pull away from the teeth.
Abscess
An abscess can occur when the bacteria has caused an infection. This can be caused from an untreated cavity or decay on a tooth. Symptoms of an abscess include pain, swollen or tender jaw, swollen gums, or a fever. If you notice any of these symptoms it is important to contact our office right away. Infections can lead to serious health problems if they are not treated promptly.
LOOKING FOR A PERIODONTIST NEAR YOU?
At Centers for Dental Implants, our patients’ health is our first priority, and we work with each patient to ensure the issue is resolved, and that the patient is pain free. Gum disease is a common issue many patients face, and keeping our mouths clean using good oral hygiene habits can prevent swollen or painful gums. If gum disease is not addressed this condition can progress into periodontitis.
We recommend brushing and flossing daily, after meals, and before bedtime. Attending your regular dental exams in our office will help to keep your teeth and mouth feeling healthy. Regular dental exams give our team the opportunity to get in front of any potential issues before they become more serious.
